viral effect to sadness

In the comment on the previous post, I mentioned a British journalist, expert on the Balkans and the author of the recently released book McMafia Mischa Glenny. Also, I posted the videos of him talking about it. One of the videos I found searching was him being a guest on American TV show hosted by Charlie Rose, speaking about the global connections of organized crime. Previously, when he was a guest on the show, Glenny spoke about wars in former Yugoslavia, NATO campaign or elections in 2000, just before it, where his predictions proved right. One of the tags of this interview was Serbia and clicking to it, I found an interview of late Prime Minister Zoran Đinđić, who was a guest on the show in 2002. He speaks about Milošević, war crimes, anti-American sentiment in Serbia, which clearly bugs Rose, as he asked the same thing Mischa Glenny in 2000, while he showed real tact by inviting Wesley Clark, Chief NATO commander during the bombing of Serbia in 1999 to be a guest on the same show, whose interview is just before Đinđić’s (this embedded long version is the one I found, his interview only can be found here). He speaks English with a slight German accent, urban legend says that Đinđić did not speak English, before becoming Prime Minister, when he applied himself quickly to it.

“What is the future of Serbia?”

“To be a part of Europe, a part of Western Europe, not to be in between, not to choose a third way, not to try with experiments ….”.

I don’t remember anyone saying this recently with such clear conviction.

“What is your political goal?”

“To modernize society and to provide stable country for our children”.

This is where I started crying. Seven months after this interview, Đinđić was assassinated in the coup, attempted by members of organized crime and certain structures within Serbian security forces. In June 2007, the perpetrators of this crime were sentenced to maximum penalty of 40 years in prison.

Today, Serbia is still in between.
